Why hospital scheduling is different
Every department runs by its own rules
Wards, clinics and on-call rosters each follow different agreements, and all of them have to respect the rest the law requires.
-
Many departments, many rules
Each ward and clinic has its own shifts, staffing levels and agreements.
-
On call, then rest
On-call duty, and the rest that has to follow it, kept for every doctor.
-
Doctors, nurses, residents
Different roles, levels and contracts, with residents and students scheduled by their own rules.
Scheduling rules
Your rules, built into every schedule
Write down the rules once: the law, your agreements and what your department heads know. EZShift builds the schedule around them and warns you the moment a change would break one.
- Hard rules are never broken by the engine
- Flexible rules are weighed, so it knows what to give up first
- Rules can apply to specific departments, positions, shifts or staff groups
- Hard
No shift for at least 15 hours after an on-call shift
- Flexible
With very high priority, prefer doctors who were not assigned on-call shifts in the past 2 weeks
- Hard
At least 1 employee tagged Senior nurse on every night shift
- Hard
Maximum 6 on-call shifts per month for employees tagged Residents
Monthly rosters
A month of on‑call, shared fairly
Build daily schedules and full monthly rosters. The engine spreads on-call shifts and weekends evenly, keeps the rest after every on-call, and lets you see how many each doctor got.
- Daily schedules and monthly rosters for every department
- A fairness table that also looks at previous months
- Rest after on-call built into your rules
- Time off and special requests approved in the system

Questions from hospitals and clinics
Does EZShift keep the rest after on-call shifts?
Yes. Add a rule such as "no shift for at least 15 hours after an on-call shift" and the engine keeps to it when it builds the roster, and warns you if a manual change would break it.
Each department has its own rules. Is that a problem?
No. Every department has its own shifts, positions and rules, all in one system, with one view of staffing across the organization.
Can residents and students have their own rules?
Yes. Tag them as a group and add rules just for them, such as a monthly limit on on-call shifts.
How are on-call shifts shared fairly?
The engine spreads on-call shifts, nights and weekends by your fairness rules, and the fairness table also looks at previous months, so the same people don’t always get the hard shifts.
Can staff clock in only when they are at the hospital?
Yes. Clocking in from the app can require the employee’s location. Staff can also clock in with an NFC tag or with a time clock.
Can a large department fit on one board?
Yes. Some of our customers run several hundred employees on a single board. Group it by position, hide the names to see coverage only, filter to one team, and highlight one employee to see where they are qualified to work.
Can I try EZShift for free?
Yes. Sign up for 14 days of full access to all features in the EZ Pro plan. No credit card is needed.
